hey there, I want to know how to set up a streaming system so that I can stream a quicktime movie (about 8mb). I've never done this before and cant find a definitive explaination anywhere. I have compressed the mov so that its a hinted streaming movie, thats not the problem. The issue is what do I do with it next????
I've read something about Apples OSX Server having a Quicktime Steaming Server built in but I dont think thats any help because the movie will be hosted on my clients hosting which I thing is a windows system, they certainly dont mention OSX or quicktime anyway.
Is there a service for example that allows you to upload your streaming movie to their server and then link that to you web page or something? If anyone can explain it all for me I'd be very grateful. Been going round in circles for ages on this.
Thanks

Some ISPs offer streaming Quicktime with their hosting packages. The ISP I use does - Server Logistics ( http://www.serverlogistics.com). All I have to do is put my movies in a specific folder.

Thanks for that. I dont think my clients host does and mine (topclasshost) dont appear to either. I thnk they only support WMV and Real Audio.
I wonder if there is another way around it or if there is a service that simply offers the streaming space rather than having to pay for a full hosting service?

I guess you should find an ISP that includes Quicktime streaming with their web space and buy their cheapest hosting package. You can get it for $10/month at Server Logistics. You might shave five bucks off that price elsewhere, but I doubt it.

Why not just use your own machines' apache server and serve it off of a broadband
connection?
/library/webserver/documents
Place your quicktime file in the /library/webserver/documents folder, go into your
system preferences and insure you have turned the webserver on and you are
golden.
Then you need to make sure your machine is visible to the net and it should work fine.

That'd be really impractical. This is for a client not for myself so I'm not gonna be hosting anything for them on my own machine. I think that kinda thing is for small scale stuff not for corporate websites etc.... Think how many times you restart you machine etc... Thanks for the thought tho

I rarely restart. Maybe once every 15-30 days...It's a thought anyway.

Instead of QTSS, I think you can always just click the "enable fast start" when exporting the movie and it'll effectively "stream" over HTTP. It'll start playing when enough of the data is received. You could enable kiosk mode or hide the QT controller if that's a concern, because technically it's being downloaded.
My web host offers QTSS and I have it set it up and working on my site. It's cool technology but you might be surprised how many netizens don't have broadband, the latest version of QT, etc that makes streaming impractical if you want to reach the biggest possible audience. I'm in the process of implementing both QT streaming & download options.

Quicktime streaming is still different from movie downloading, and you can't just dump it onto any web server. A Quicktime streaming server lets you skip to any part of a video or audio stream, among other things.
