I've had problems in the past with my disks slowing down after all the abuse I put them through with the graphic design/illustration/motion graphics work I do. I've attempted to use tech tool pro before on an externally booted HD to defragment and optimize my drive, but that's led to two total crashes where my drive completely tanked and I had to start from fresh. Is there anything out there that does a decent job without the risk of totally scrambling a drive? Also, once I get everything optimized I'd like to clone the drive to an external so that even if something goes wrong I can work seamlessley to meet deadlines. Thanks for the help.

I have used Super Duper to clone to an external drive and worked fine. Just remember that it will erase the external drive (or what ever cloning to) or partition prior to cloning. Remember also to select the clone as the boot drive if you wish to boot from the clone. Claims to do a basic defrag since it is file by file disk clone. Havent noticed much difference on the defrag but has done well as a safe bootable backup or upgrade to a larger drive.
