For some reason all my docs that were saved as TextEdit docs have become Script Editor docs. Also when I try to save a doc - like a email from Entourage - it automatically saves as a Script Editor doc instead of a TextEdit doc. What is going on!

I did use Script Editor yesterday to do a small AppleScript.

What should I do? Aside from panic that is.

Calm down and do a search. If you had, you would have found that all you need to do is
1. Get info on such a document
2. Reveal the "Open with application" section
3. Choose your desired application from the popup menu
4. Click the "Change all" button and confirm

The icons won't change for all documents until next time you log in, but they should still open in whatever app you chose.

Thanks!! Wonder what happened to cause this to occur in the first place?

OS X has some sort of registration system by which apps sign up to handle files of certain types. I guess Script Editor decided, for whatever reason, to steal the association for that file type. I don't know why that would spontaneously happen, though.

The database OS X uses to keep track of which types belong to which apps is called the LaunchServices database. Most likely, Script Editor did not "steal" the association for that file type, but rather, the database got messed up somehow. It happens sometimes, but is rare. I encounter this occasionally when someone complains because Pacifist has "stolen" the association for .pkg from Installer, and I can guarantee as the author that Pacifist does not touch the LaunchServices database at all.

Anyway, the LaunchServices database is found in /Library/Caches and consists of every file in there whose name starts with com.apple.launchservices and ends with .csstore. If the database becomes corrupted somehow and doesn't let you change the file associations, you can just delete those files and reboot to get a clean LaunchServices database. There are also "cache cleaner" programs available on the Web that will do this for you, although I don't really recommend clearing the LaunchServices caches unless you're having some sort of problem.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!
