When I was experimenting with iDVD and iMovie HD, I was confused about how they differ, and which one I would use to make a backup copy of one of my all time favorite movies, The Aviator.

Neither. Both are content creation apps, not copying apps.

please search this forum and the Mac OS forum and the Digital Audio & Video forum for "Copy DVD" or some such combination.

there's been at least a dozen threads on how to copy commercial video DVDs for private use, some of them very detailed.
