You don't need a midi keyboard to run the program or even create music with it.
A midi keyboard though would make things so much easier. Like emulating a note that is half pressed etc. You can even do that without it but you'll be spending more time in cheating stuff than creating actual music.
Midi keyboards are not that expensive anymore. You can get a 25 key keyboard for under $150.
But before that try the demo of reason to see if it suits you. Cause a lot of people don't really like the way reason works.

You can get a 49 key (4 octave) MIDI controller for 100, or even a 61 key (5 octave) MIDI controller for 170.

I'd go with the 61, but thats just because of wanting to be able to play across multiple octaves in one pass. You could probably get by on a 49 key.
maybe you've been brainwashed too.

Check out the M-Audio Oxygen 8 - it also has controller knobs that are very useful for tweaking synth parameters within reason.

reason is AMAZING...i've done remixes & record production with it
(in sync with logic, for vocals etc).

scored 2 adult (!) movies, music for mtv, the shield (dvd), and now a new mtv project.

it's a rack of studio gear at your fingertips...
but get a keyboard (at least something like an m-audio or edirol); will make a big difference.

You definitely need a MIDI controller/keyboard to enjoy the full functionality and creativity that Reason offers. I second the reccomendation of the M-Audio gear. I specifically reccomend the Radium 61-key against the Oxygen or Keystation series products. For creating trance, I don't think you will need anything with more keys or with hammer-action. The built in knobs and sliders on the Radium are very handy for modifying filters and modulatuion settings.

Reason is really an awesome appplication and it just keeps getting better with each release and all the refill packs that are available. It integrates well with most other pro audio apps using the ReWire protocol, so you can use it in ProTools, Cubase, Logic, etc.

I ended up using an inexpensive Casio MIDI keyboard in my early days of my MIDI music
career. Later, I ended up getting a Yamaha CS1X because it had knobs that transferred
ADSR + 2 other controls directly to softsynths in any number of programs.

That CS1X turned out to be a valuable purchase, last I heard the follow-up (CS2X) which
had better sounds had the same basic format.

Most people who listen to my stuff have no idea that EVERYTHING is generated from the
computer, no sound sources on the keyboard itself generate the sound. The only analog
audio comes from instruments that are recorded direct or recorded via mic such as kalimba
or banjo.
