SMTP Mail/Network problem in Entourage...

Hi, everyone. I have a puzzling problem I'm seeking help on.

I use my PB for work, and I access my e-mail through Entourage via the web. I can receive just fine, but when I try to send, I get an error message stating that, "The SMTP server does not recognize the authentication method used by Entourage..."

Now, this is occurring on my Airport Network at home. It does not happen when I'm on the network at work, nor does it happen on any number of other networks I've been on outside of work. To make it even weirder, I has happened on some non-work networks.

Now, in some cases, I would just go in and make the authentication the same as the receiving server. Sometimes this would work, but not on other networks. Thing is, I'd have to switch back to use it on another network or at work.

Confused yet? I bloody well am!

So..... what am I doing wrong? I really need to fix this so I can work from home. Oh, and if you could please keep the explanation to simple English, I'd appreciate it. I'm not too bright when it comes to all this communications stuff....

Thanks!

one reason it might not be working is your work SMTP is not setup to relay from an outside IP or maybe just your ISP.
get you system admin to double check you can use your work SMTP externally from work.

if you don't want to talk to them, they should be friendly - buy them cakes or beers.. works for me, but if not you could use the SMTP server that your ISP has given you and change the setting in entourage to the home SMTP server.

does that make sense?

I'm afraid not...

One thing, though. I AM able to log on very easily, say, from the network at the local Hampton Inn, so the corporate server DOES allow outside connections. This has to be a settings issue between Entourage and whatever network I happen to be on. In this case, it's my new Airport Extreme at home.

In some cases, I just select the "make send server same as receive server" setting, and presto, problem solved. That's not working hee, though...
