I have a great number of tiffs that I'd like to batch into jpgs - while keeping the same file string. Is there another software package that does it better?

You should be able to do that with Automator.

Well, I've been working on it all morning and have not come up anything that works. There must be a quick application that works without having to write one myself. Anyone know of one. I'd like to change a large number (couple of thousand, at least) of Tiffs into Jpegs AND (if possible) resize a bit - keeping the same ID strings. There must be a few out there ... for Tiger.

This is a trivial task for GraphicConverter. I've used it to do exactly that (batch scale thousands of IFFs and convert to TIFF in my case). IMHO, well worth the $30.

It's even more trivial in Automator:
• In the library select "Finder"
• Drag "Get specified Finder Items" into the workflow
• Click the [+] button and select all the images you want to convert to JPG. You then have a list of specific items you want to work with.
• In the Library select "Preview"
• Drag "Change Type of Images" into the workflow (don't make copies if you don't want to keep the old files)
• In the "To Type" popup select "JPEG"
Now just hit the "Run" button in Automator and all images are converted. It's easy.
