So "VBR" is a new option in iTunes' AAC encoder, but is it better? Or is it just different?

Can someone please explain to me the difference between ABR and VBR results?

All Google searches provided LAME-specific explanations.

This is the best explanation I could find:
Code:
CBR (constant bitrate) = variable quality        / target: file size ABR (average bitrate)  = nearly constant quality / target: file size VBR (variable bitrate) = constant quality        / target: quality
Not sure what it means for iTunes' specific encoder. VBR-encoded files are still labeled "128kbps" (or the rate selected), but the files are bigger.

You can see the actual bitrate in Quicktime. The quality should be better while the filesizes will be somewhat unpredictable.

Thanks, that was the impression I was getting, but it's good to get it verified.

Argh! Is it just me or is there no way to tell from within iTunes that a song is VBR? If so, that's a pretty silly oversight.

It should say "(VBR)" next to the bitrate if a song has a variable bitrate.
Genius. You know who.

It doesn't, from what I've read in the discussion on the HydrogenAudio forums. Actually, it seems like all this does is extend the range of the variation that was already being allowed in Apple's default AAC implementation. I'm not really sure that it is "true" VBR.

VBR encoded songs do indeed show "(VBR)" next to the bitrate — I'm looking at one right now.
