This does sound like Preview is not displaying that file (but still opening it).

Use Adobe Reader for this document.

The files show up fine for me in Preview 3.0.1 (Mac OS 10.4.2).
You might want to give Adobe Reader or PDF Browser Plugin a try.

Does anyone know why preview in 10.3.9 would not work and 10.4 would? It works just fine in other sites. Is there something the hockey site is now doing wrong or different, like the why they are putting on? A setting or something?

I got blank pdf's using Preview in 10.3.9.

Also tried AR 5.0.5 which could not open them as well.

They're just JPG's imbedded in PDF's. What a waste (they should just be text!). If AR 5 can't open them... they must've done something, I don't know WHAT, that only newer versions of AR and Preview can open them.

They are created with Adobe Acrobat 6.0.2 Paper Capture which I'm guessing could potentially mean that they are using a more recent spec for PDF than older versions of Preview and Adobe Reader can view.

Adobe Acrobat 6.0.2 Paper Capture is just the content creator. The PDF version is what matters. It's 1.5 on the PDF I checked.

When you're creating a PDF you choose how much compatibility you want in your file. Older versions of the spec don't support some of the features of later versions yet saving as a newer version excludes those running older versions of Preview and Adobe Reader.

I had a PDF that I couldn't open with preview but I could with acrobat 7 under 10.4. I then fed it through pdfshrink because I wanted to optimise it and after that, preview opened the file OK.

Select the pdf file and bring up the Info window, Command-I. In the Open With section make sure Preview is selected. Then give it a try.

What has that to do with the original question?

It is normal for Apple not to significantly update applications that are part of the operating system between major system updates.

Apple have updated Preview (and the frameworks necessary to make it work) as part of OS X 10.4, so if you updated to 10.4 you would be able to view those PDFs (as I can). They will not be updating 10.3 any further, so I wouldn't expect to be able to open those files in the 10.3 version of Preview. You'll have to rely on Adobe Reader.
