Hello all!

I'm new to this board. I'm a first time Mac user, long time PC owner. I recently made the switch to a G4. Problem is I have no idea how to install any software (Quark, Photoshop, Windows Media Player, etc.) When ever i try to install something I a message saying:

Classic is starting...

A short time later I get this message:

The version of Quicktime installed in the Mac OS 9 system folder used by Classic is not recommended

I haven't tried installing a newer version of Quicktime because I didn't want to do anything before getting some advise. If anyone can help it would be appreicated.

Thanks.

Basically, you are trying to install 'classic' apps, therefore Mac OS X is starting the Classic environment.

Classic apps are those built to run natively under Mac OS 9 and previous Apple operating systems.

This is how Mac OS 9 looks:

And here you have a sight towards Mac OS history.

So you can run those 'old' apps under the newer Mac OS X, think on it like running DOS apps under some windows flavour. But there are, of course, the same apps updated to run 'natively' under Mac OS X, that is, they are not going to run with previous Mac OS editions.

Check a site like macupdate or Apple's one to find newer and Mac OS X ready apps to run with your G4.

To install Mac OS apps is really easy, just download them and via a drag & drop place them manually into the Apps or Utilities folder and you are done. There are some apps that come with an installer really, but that is not an issue, a double clic to install and presto.

Dealing with install / uninstall proccess under Mac OS is way better than under Windows.

Do you know what versions of the apps you are trying to install? If it is Photoshop 7 or later, Quark 6 or later, WiMP 9.0, then this shouldn't be happening as they are native to Mac OS X. If they are earlier versions, then the above post is valid - these are not OS X apps.

You should be able to update QuickTime of Classic with the Update control panel of OS 9 (when running in Classic use the Apple menu->Control panels->Software Update).

The apps I'm trying to install are Quark 5, Photoshop CS and Win Player 9. Now I tried to update the quicktime in the OS 9 folder by draging and droping the Quicktime program I downloaded from apple into the OS 9 Apps folder but i get the message:

The item "QuicktimeInstallerX.dmg" could not be moved because "Quicktime" cannot be modified

and I'm asked to "Authenticate". Should I Authenticate?

You should get a good beginner's book on Mac OS X and read it.

To me it sounds like you are trying to install pirated software. Don't do it. It will safe you a lot of hassle.

I'm not really inclined to help you any further with pirating.

QuicktimeInstallerX.dmg is the installer for the Mac OS X version of Quicktime (and will already be installed, so you don't need to do it again), not the OS 9 version. What you are trying to do will not work anyway.

For what it's worth, a .dmg file is a so-called "disk image". If you double click it, it will open as a virtual disk on your desktop. You can then drag and drop the app to your desired install location, or if it is an installer (e.g. .pkg file) for an app, run the installer.

Out of the apps you listed, only Quark 5 should be giving you this problem. Photoshop CS and Win Player 9 are native to Mac OS X and should install without opening the Classic Environment. Are they launching Classic when you try to install them? If so, what is the filename of the installers? Is their extension .sit by any chance? If it is then you may not have the MacOS X version of Stuffit Expander installed (which is what opens .sit files - these are compressed archives whose contents need to be unstuffed before you can use them). If you don't have the Mac OS X version installed, then the OS 9 (or Classic) version will be launched instead, which requires the Classic environment to run first and could explain why you are seeing Classic launch.

Look in your /Applications and /Applications/Utilities folder for an application or folder called Stuffit Expander or Stuffit Standard. If you don't have one there, then visit http://www.stuffit.com/mac/index.html and download Stuffit Expander (for OS X).

I seem to remember that the Windows Media Player download requires StuffIt Expander which is not installed with Tiger any more. You need to download that separately.
