I've been using Spotlight to launch my applcations, but I've realized it's slow and not always accurate unless I filter it down to Applications only, but then I can't use the other features of Spotlight. I know LaunchBar is an option, but I'd rather not pay for something this simple.
I'm looking for a piece of software that will give me a list of applications, but preferably not in one long list, but divided into categories. I've found Himmel Bar, but that only allows me to add one custom location, and if the applications are in their own application folder, they don't show up on the list. I also found TigerLaunch, but that doesn't allow separate categories, just one long list.
I'm also open to other ways to launch applications, but like I said, I'd prefer to do it for free. Otherwise I'd go with LaunchBar or DragThing.
Thanks for any suggestions.

If you're committed to free solutions, why not use a Dock folder menu? Also, if you're using Spotlight as a launcher, everyone recommends Quicksilver instead.

That means I have to organize my applications folder the way I want the "menu" displayed. I'd rather not move stuff around like that. Plus, it's just a personal preference of mine to launch from the top, rather than the dock.

You could create a folder with aliases of the applications you want and put that in the dock. Then you can put the aliases in categorised folders, such as Music Apps, or Utilities or whatever.
Personally, I put the apps I use most frequently in the dock on the left side (most of them run all the time anyways) and use tigerlaunch for others I use less frequently. I still narrow my tigerlaunch menu down so it doesn't have to scroll on my 1024x768 screen for easy access.

I good search engine that is so quick and smart like launchbar is by no means simple.
Launchbar lets you use it for free if you don't open more than 7 different items. Then it starts reminding you but still works.
If you don't want to pay for good work try Quicksilver.

You should check out Butler. I've tried every launcher I can find for OS X. It's the best in my book if you're looking for a menu bar style launcher. It's free (at least for the time being).
