Anyone else get this annoying rendering bug on MSNBC? Notice how the horizontal scroll bar ... 1) is not even necessary and 2) scrolls up the page? If you scroll all the way up it disappears and goes away. I've reported the bug to Apple but I was wondering if anyone else sees the same behavior. I'm running the latest Tiger and Safari 2.0.1.

I used the debug menu to change the user agent to "Mozilla 1.1" and "Windows MSIE 6.0" and it seems to behave properly like that. I don't know if that is changing the way Safari renders or if the site sends different HTML based upon how the browser identifies itself. All I know is that I shouldn't have to do that on such a frequently visited site.

I'm not getting that, and I'm on Safari 2.0.1. Strange.

Your post title confused me. You mean "MSNBC on Safari". Meanwhile, I was wondering why Safari would be mentioned in the news.

I don't have that scrollbar issue in Safari 2.0 here. The worst I can say about MSNBC is that it's ugly, and the code is a gross mish-mash of tables.

Now that you mention it the post title can be confusing. I probably should have said it the other way. My bad!

Unfortunately Safari 2.0.2 doesn't fix this problem. Neither do the latest nightlies. I've sent feedback to Apple with the "Report Bugs to Apple" menu. I've also fired off an email to MSNBC and mentioned this problem. The funny thing is that if I use the debug menu to change the User Agent to "Windows MSIE 6.0" the problem goes away entirely. So the question becomes is this a Safari rendering issue or a website coding issue? This is the only site where I've seen Safari do this but it is a site that I use daily so it's very annoying.

No problems here with Safari 2.0.2.

But why some have the problem and others not? Alas, I remain confused.

Doesn't happen on my iBook using Safari 1.3.1. I'll try it on my G5 when I get home.

I get this every now and then on a lot of web sites. (running with all the latest Apple updates).

I have to do a page up then down to force the screen to repaint properly. This has been going on for a while so I don't believe it's a 10.4.3 thing.

That doesn't look like a rendering issue.

I have rendering issues with that site in Firefox: the "Rising" news box over Newsweek flickers like crazy while it updates, and - probably through ad blocking - I don't have anything showing where the "Your Local News" and "Market Indices" boxes in the above screenshot are.

Something I just noticed about this issue. The erroneous horizontal scroll bar is somewhat erratic. I see it on MSNBC typically but it doesn't always occur on that site. What I noticed today was that whenever I saw it there was a Flash ad somewhere on the page, but when I didn't see it there was not. Anyone else notice a similar pattern?

After further investigation, a conflict with Flash may not be the culprit. I disabled all the Flash plugins, relaunched Safari, and navigated around the site. While the problem didn't occur as frequently, I still came across it. Oh well ....

I don't see it at all, Safari 2.0.2 (416.12) and Flash 8.0r22. I do sometimes (but usually not) get horizontal scroll bars on sites that shouldn't have them, like GameFAQs.com, but I've seen the same bug in Win IE.

Edit: I don't see it with a Flash ad on the page, either.
