i tried dumping all my music files into one folder on my external drive. i selected all tracks in itunes and dragged them to the external.

unfortunately, nothing copied over. if i do the tracks individually, they copy just fine. can anyone help me figure this out?

thanks.

You should copy the music folder itself, not the list in iTunes.

Then you need to go into iTunes > Preferences and reset the location of the iTunes Music library.

Open your Music folder and drag the entire iTunes folder to the external.

thanks for the reply randman. i actually just wanted the files them selves into a single folder, without organization by itunes. normally for several files i just drag them out of iTunes. but it wont work if i select ALL my files. hope you can help with this.

Why do you want that? Always better to let iTunes organize the music. And if you have an external, it'll serve double duty as a backup of your music.
