You can't do it with Yahoo's free U.S. service. Gmail has instructions on its site.

HTTP Mail plug-in can give you access to both Hotmail and Yahoo accounts in Mail.app

You could try usingMacFreePOPs which promises to do what you want and more.

You can't use hotmail with mail without paying Microsoft a premium for a Hotmail Plus account.

Which is a total PITA as my gf uses hotmail to mail photos to a magazine so has to spend hours attaching images in hotmail's appalling attachment interface.

Help me with new gmail acct via mail app?

Mail keeps saying there's a network problem. I've followed the directions on gmail site (as above).
The only thing weird I can see is that the gmail page shows the SMTP server port as 587, and my mac offered me 25 to begin (and 995 once). My other SMTPs seem to be set at 110 (except .mac at 143). Anybody else had (& resolved) gmail via mail issues?

[PS: also, can you enlighten me about what ports these are - are they saying what ports on my Mac to use? or what ports to use on the remote mail server.]
Gracias!

Love Calm Quiet,

I don't know too much about this, but are you having problems sending email, but having no trouble getting email?

I had this problem for awhile, until I figured out that my ISP was blocking all SMTP servers. They do this to keep track of spam being sent on their network. To send email, you have to use their own SMTP server, something like, mail.cox.net for example (not sure if that's real).

Look up on your ISP's website if they require you to use a special SMTP server, or call them.

Also the port for gmail is 587, for some weird reason. Most SMTP servers use port 25, but 587 is correct for gmail.

Hope this helps, and if this isn't your problem and was a complete waste of time, I apologize

Not a waste of time at all. Definitely helps to know about the 587 port.

I'll test some more. But it's not an ISP problem, since my other accounts are SMTP (via port 110).
Thanks for answering on turkey day!

Well, I've made sure again that it's using port 587. And Mail cannot connect to RECEIVE mail. When I recheck the settings and then ask it to go online, it looks like it worked. But then when I hit "check mail" I get the "~" symbol for being off line for the gmail account.

I had a similar problem. On your Gmail Settings page, under Forwarding and Pop, make sure POP is enabled. Hope this helps.

Thanks Anna... That's a key issue. (gMail COULD have mentioned that in instructions for Mac setup?)

After getting that set up at gmail, Mail app IS working better: it nolonger drops password from some of the Preferences fields. But I'm still getting the "~" / offline error (though my other SMTP accts check mail fine).

I have a deja vue feeling that there's something SIMPLE I've probably botched. I may have to sleep on it and check spelling in every field in morning.

But... any other hints are appreciated!

I'd forgotten that we had some .mac addresses available, so I gave her one of those.

All is well.

But all's not so well with trying to get this gmail acct working through mail (see above).

Any ace trouble-shooters on gmail?

Okay, for future reference for others:
I discovered that my OUTgoing gmail was working (after going back to gmail's site and turning on POP in their "settings").
So I went back to examine outgoing prefs in Mail app: Using the "Advanced" tab I set the Port (under "Check with your system administrator before changin any of the advanced options below") to 995 (NOT to 587 as you do with SMTP port), kept "Use SSL" checked. And set "Authentication" to "Password".
I've now got gmail coming in and going out.
Smoother sailing to those who follow, I hope!
