This post is two problems really -- and rather unrelated -- but I'm hoping I can fix them in one go. Here's the backstory:
I installed Tiger on a 500MHz G4 (AGP); installed the updates, etc. When I went to install applications (e.g., USB Overdrive), I discovered that Install.app doesn't work. (1) It has no icon, just the blank sheet and (2) it just bounces in the Dock a couple of times and then stops. Conicidentally, or maybe not so conincidentally, I noticed that
all of the tools in Utilities, like Disk Copy, also appread to be broken -- no icon, just bounce, etc.
Well, I'm a glutton for punishment, so I installed USB Overdrive anyway using Pacifist. Upon restart and post-login (1) there was an error message about USB Overdrive's .kext file not being able to be used and (2) I have no ability to control my mouse. (On the upside, the keyboard works, but that doens't get one too far.)
My assumption is that the easiest fix will be to Archive & Install, preserving Users & Network settings, and re-update through Software Update. The OS and MS Office were the only things installed, although ALL of my personal files (many GB) were already transferred -- thus I don't want to take the time to do a Clean Install and recopy all of my files. I'm assuming that this will clear up the Utilities problem as well as remove the bad .kext file/botched USB Overdrive install.
Any additional thoughts and comments on the matter? I just want to make sure that I haven't missed anything. I've been out of the Mac OS for a little while and just wanted to make sure that I hadn't missed anything. (Like the other day when I searched and searched for a Control Panel when I really wanted a Preference Pane.)
I'd appreciate anything anyone has to offer. This should work, right?
