Apparently Apple thinks that rewind (Command-left arrow) is always supposed to be all the way to the beginning of a song. Is there any way (besides dragging the little black doohickey with the mouse) to rewind in small increments using the keyboard?

No need to drag the black pointer.. You can just click anywhere on the progress bar, and the song will instantly play from that point.
If you need to scrub back & forth tho, then maybe you are better off playing the file in QT, where you can shuffle back & forth with a scroll wheel equipped mouse.
The worst thing about having a failing memory is..... no, it's gone.

True, but that's not quite what I need.

Ah, good idea. I'm transcribing dictation, so that sounds like a very fine approach. Too bad it doesn't seem to play the sound while scrubbing, though, nor does it auto-play from that point; you have to restart it manually, it seems.
