Few of Google's projects, rumors of projects, and acquisitions have generated as much envy among Linux users as Google Earth. In some respects the search engine behemoth is quite OS-agnostic, but the 3D virtual globe remains limited to Windows desktops. But there is an alternative: NASA's World Wind project. Like Google Earth, it's a 3D planetary visualization system that overlays satellite imagery, weather, political, and topological map data. The difference is: World Wind is open source.
Only trouble is:

No binaries available and I even haven't tried to make them. However you should be able to do this without any modifications to source code.
So, who's up for the challenge?

They've said that for quite some time. I'm find it hard to believe it should take this much time, provided they are _really_ working on it...

Yeah, right! The World Wind stuff seems to be written in C#/.NET and DirectX.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

It's been compiled for several Linux flavours.

"WW2D depends on wxWidgets 2.6+ and libCURL so you'll need them to compile from sources and to run dinamically-linked binaries. Also make sure you have OpenGL dirvers installed"

Where does it say that?

This is what I found:

World Wind requires that you have .NET runtime environment and DirectX installed.

Also, if you download the source code, it's clearly made of .cs files.

Ah, never mind, I see that the WW2D you are speaking of is actually a third-party re-implementation of the engine. Although, it does say on his site that WW2D in this particular form is deprecated and that he rewrote the app in .NET.
