I am finally getting clear of all my classic apps and planning to migrate to Tiger. One of my last remaining ones is FileTyper, which I use to change type and creator tags on files.

Any suggestions for a freeware(!) or shareware OSX equivalent?

Thanks - Roy

I like XRay, which is $10 shareware.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

A friend of mine is the programmer of FileType which should do the trick. It's freeware.

Umm... why are you relying on type/creator codes? They are supported, but not required in MacOS X.

Every once in a while you're either dealing with Classic or with some Carbon app that hasn't fully transitioned to the new ways yet.

Example: Sibelius 3 required the type code. It didn't recognize files with the .sib extension, even though that's what I think the extension is on the Windows version. I haven't tried Sibelius 4, so I don't know if they've fixed that yet, but in 3, you definitely had to mess with type/creator codes.

I am well aware of this, I had to whip up an AppleScript droplet to give to some of my users this week because of a really bad Classic app and some problems with Services for Macintosh on a Windows server.

But if you are going away from Classic, there really should not be much call for this, and anything you have to do should be doable with a 6 line AppleScript.

Although I still like the classic Type and Creator, Launch Services obviates it most all of the time. Just associates the files with their respective apps through the Finder. Hopefully developers will reduce their dependence on file extensions.
