Ok 10.4.2

I open mail read mail and then when I close mail and reopen or view my IMAP account or Gmail on another machine all of my read messages come up as unread.

Hmmmmm

right click the mailbox and choose synchronize

try the 'automatically sync changed mailboxes' setting under advances in the account settings.
