The latest webkit nightly builds fix the issue where you could never use the WYSIWYG editing tools with forums, and other online software. The cursor correctly uses the insert point!

You can see what I mean with this video clip:

Yeah...the latest WebKit builds are amazing. I can't wait 'till Apple finally releases it officially so everyone can benefit from all the new stuff been working on for the last few months.

edit: edited to actually test out the new fixes.

Hey, cool. This is a very welcome addition. I've been using NightShift to grab the latest nightly for a while now and never would have noticed this. Makes formatting posts much easier.

Yeah, that is pretty cool. I guess I have to go read up on how to upgrade Safari.

NightShift is probably the easiest way to get the latest WebKit builds.

By the same guy who made CaminoKnight, CaminIcon, FireFix and SafarIcon.

Looks great, thank you!

Cool, the upgrade solved a lengthy rendering delay with a particular set of pages that came about with Safari 2.0. This app definitely deserves a donation. . .

I used NightShift to download and install the latest WebKit; however, I cannot use the WYSIWYG editing tools as noted above in Safari. Did I do something wrong?

Would you possibly be running 2.0 instead of 2.1, rickey? I am running 2.0, and the inline editing doesn't work for me either.

After NightShift does its thing there should be an app called WebKit in /Applications. This is what you launch to run Safari with the nightly WebKit build.

I just bookmarked this page:

http://bdash.net.nz/files/webkit/nightly/

Download nightlies every once in awhile. I'm currently running the +SVG (scalable vector graphics, however not yet implemented in working order) build, and I've been using these builds as my fulltime browser for a couple months now.

Yeah it's nice that the nighly builds are open to everyone. I still can't get over the cursor insertion bug being fixed. This is a great one!

The only thing missing now is multiple cursor insertions (possible now with new features in Tiger)...people now have the ability to edit multiple blocks of text (you can try this now by selecting some text, holding the cmd key down and selecting another block of text.)

I'm guessing this is a limitation of the WYSIWYG tool code used by forums and not OS X...they're only geared to add tags to one text selection.

According the the WebKit guys in the IRC channel, they are working with Google on GMail and Google Maps issues in the latest builds.

Interestingly, the problems are arising not because of bugs in Safari, but rather Google code that was written for current shipping versions of Safari. The latest WebKit builds have JS that is more compliant and more inline with Mozilla Firefox, thus breaking the Google JS code hacked for current versions of Safari.

If you want to use gMail, just switch the mail view over to HTML. That button still works.

If that's the case, then fixing it should be a simple matter of changing the user agent to Mozilla.

You really, really, really need to learn how to compress movies! 32MB for 19 seconds of video with little movement is WAAAAAY too much. I was able to compress it down to under 2MB and maintain a passable video quality.

Or you could just use Safari. You can run both Safari and WebKit.app simultaneously…

Gmail works, you just have to turn on basic HTML for reading.

Sometimes that application doesn't download it correctly, download from this URL:Webkit Nightly Builds

Make sure you are running 10.4, it won't work 10.3, make sure you dont' have SAFT or any other extensions installed.

Also maybe the homepage you set by default crashes it, change it to something like google.com in safari first.

Ah... It was Saft. Too bad because I like the draggable tabs. Thanks!

The standard Google mode is currently incompatible with the new version. You can use simple HTML mode, however.

This is cool. So how often does the new stuff make it into a real update of safari?

Also, does anyone know of or have a page that shows off the new goodies? Like css features that work now, etc. According to the blog http://webkit.opendarwin.org/blog/ it can now do some css3 stuff like divs with rounded corners.

Hmm... so it half works. I get rounded corners but the border cuts out. Pretty cool.
And I just selected this text and surrounded it with code tags, so the editing works great - rad!

Code:
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd"> <html> <head> <title>Test</title> <style type="text/css"> div{ width: 150px; padding: 30px 50px; margin: auto auto; border:2px black solid; border-radius:10px 10px; background:red; } </style> </head> <body> <div> Rounded Corner Test </div> </body> </html>

I don't understand. I download "Webkit" using "Nightshift" but it looks like Safari. No differences in Gmail or other sites. No news in CSS Styles too...

There should be an application called WebKit in /Applications. You need to run that; quit safari first. It pops up safari and tells it to use the alternate webkit library. There will be a different safari icon in the dock.

Yeah, if you're not seeing a gold rimmed Safari icon in your Dock, you're not running the nightly.

I've never before tried NightShift to access nightly builds of WebKit, but am impressed with the seemlessness with which it enables essentially another version of Safari - accessing my bookmarks, etc.

I can't tell much of any diff between it and Safari 2.0.1. Anything else I should check out in the way of new features?

I was using Nightshift until today when I got an error and it wouldn't download. Found the article about going straight to Hyatt's blog.

Now I finally have the cool gold rimmed icon back. For some reason, most of the time, I had a generic app icon using Nightshift.

What is the SVG version of Webkit? I didn't download that version.

Weird - I had recently moved over to Camino, because Safari had become unuseable (due to the UI locking-up with the beachball everytime anything loaded.)

Using the nightlies makes it totally usable again - even though it's the effectively the same Safari app.

The funniest thing I've run into is that I can't get to the nightly webkit page with Safari.I have no idea why, but the page won't load. Loads fast in Camino though! Oh the irony.

If I right-click on a highlighted word in Safari I get a context menu that allows me to look up that word in Google, Spotlight, or in the Dictionary. This is a feature that I like a lot!

When running the nightly webkit all I get is "Copy" as an option. Does anyone else find this problem?
