imovie effects not working

I haven't worked in imovie for a while so forgive me if I'm missing something.
When I add an effect to a clip imovie does the processing showing the red progress bar and the effect previews correctly. When it finishes processing the effect it changes the clip to a blank one-no video and no effect.

Does anyone know what I might be doing wrong?
