Does anyone know if you can make a DVD from a purchased iTunes video?
Cheers

You cannot. No burning of purchased video. He (Steve) said so in the presentation.

this has to be the achilles heel of this whole new TV/Videos thing.
steve said in the presentation that there is no burning of ANY kind...not even as a data cd/dvd. this is of course completely insane. This allows, for most people, no way of backing up the the video content you have paid for.
I can understand not allowing them to be burned to a video DVD. I am fine with that. But not being able to burn them as data where they would still be protected under the Fairplay DRM is just crazy talk.

You can back up the files to a data DVD - but it won't be viewable in a DVD player.

that point was not made clear in the presentation. in fact it even says there "no cd or dvd burning" of video content and i have read from several other outlets that burning of the videos of any kind, even as a data disk, was restricted. As stated I can understand not being able to burn it to a video DVD, but a data CD/DVD restriction would just be insane.
i might actually buy some of them now when there is more to choose from.
i watch Lost religiously, so no need to buy that. Nightstalker is so so. could care less about the others. but at least i can back the stuff up.

I dont see the logic behind not allowing to burn to DVD. We're allowed to burn our purchased music to CD to play on our CD players. Fair enough.
Why not allow me to burn purchsed shows on DVD? Or, at least allow the purchasing of a DVD through ITMS. They're already goign to have every episode of some shows available. Why not make the leap.
or maybe that's being saved for iTunes 6.1.... sorry, iTunes 7 since apparently .x updates aren't good enough anymore.

they dont allow video DVD burning because unlike getting around the fairplay drm for music copying a standard burnt DVD is insanely simple (not that getting around the audio one is rocket science). if apple allowed the stuff to be burned to a video DVD they could be pirated. not like that isnt going to stop people and not like this stuff can't be found elsewhere, but apple has to play by the rules...which of course sucks for us, but i can see their reasoning.

Tightening up the DRM - DVDs are easily ripped.

I'm sure it's part of the deal Apple made with Disney/ABC to get them on board. Have to allay their fear of "pirating" somehow.

Exactly. I want to buy several hundred music videos (just a quick scan, man there is some neat stuff in there) and make a DVD to plop in my player to put in my home theater (where i distribute video to the rest of the house) for parties. Instead of just music playing, music videos playing. Much more entertaining. I guess I will have to do that via a video iPod. not what i wanted to do though.
I will wait awhile, see what else shakes from the Apple tree.

I had no problem burning one of the videos I bought to a data CD. So backup is not an issue.
I suspect that locking out burning of iTMS video to a video DVD was a concession to the studios. Besides, who'd want to burn 320x240 video and watch full-size on a TV? It'd look like crap.
Right now, its pretty clear that Apple is targeting these video clips for primarily watching on an iPod screen.

We burned a Lost episode to CD and then transferred it to another computer. Had to authorize it to get it to play in iTunes. Forgot to try and see if we could play it with Quicktime before authorizing so don't know if that works.
