Apple reportedly stated today it won't be available by itself. It's only for the new iMacs.

I suspect this is a temporary step for something bigger once the x86 Macs are out. They may also make it part of iLife eventually.

Give it a week or so, I'm sure somebody will post it online. My guess is this little apple will work with Any iSight.

I'm guessing its a very hardware specific bit of software. Remember that it actually flashes the screen white to provide a photo flash. Not sure a CRT can do that. Not sure how easy it would be to make 3rd party LCDs do it (without entering a world of liability) and opening the door to UI Experience that Apple has little or no control over (which I'm assured keeps Steve-O up at night).

What the heck are you talking about?

The only think happening is the whole screen going white for a couple milliseconds. Any screen can display millions of white pixels.

It's either showing a fullscreen white window or changing the gamma curve (see System Prefernces->Universal Access->Hearing->Test the screen flash for an example for the latter). A CRT can do both just fine.

I would love to see Apple make this available to us all. It looks like a fun app and they obviously had a blast making it.

Plus, I think there would be some neat freeware or shareware additions made soon by our great developer base that would only add to the fun.

Why would it be that difficult to make it available to other Macs? As long as you have an iSight it should work (use iSight as a kind of dongle for the program to work).
Flashing a screen white is easy enough, as said above.

But I guess it's the same as with Front Row: give it some time to market the new iMac and then we'll see it coming in an iLife or Tiger update.

The thing about Photo Booth is that it is using CoreImage/CoreVideo for the silly filter and distortion effects.

So...

1) it'll only run on Macs with 10.4
2) it'll only run decently on Macs with a video card that can handle CI/CV in realtime

Apple probably feels this app should only be bundled with shipping Macs just as some form of control.

Sure, Photo Booth will probably start floating around on the net soon...but don't expect it to work if you don't have both 10.4 and a card that can handle CI/CV well (and a webcam of course.)

Photo Booth probably took a week or 2 to develop (ahaha, develop, I crack myself up ). The GUI was probably the longest part...the realtime CI/CV effects on a camera feed is pretty much a freebie to developers.

To answer some of your questions, Photo Booth works fine with any Mac that runs 10.4 (CoreImage just falls back on the processor) and will work with any camera that iChat supports - my Fire-i camera works fine.

It also works with CRTs - the screen goes white for a split second. On a Mac mini 1.25 the effects aren't completely fluid but it is usable for taking snaps.

Now the question is when o when will it be available for the rest of us, or where to get it in the mean time...

It is online already. And it works on both Macs I've tried. Ran terribly slow on an 800mhz iMac G4, and decently on a PowerBook 1.5Ghz 12".

EDIT: Not online from Apple, it's...elsewhere.

1) This thread is waaay too old to be posted in again - you should have started a new thread.

2) Your Core Duo Mac Mini came with PhotoBooth - its in your applications folder (unless you did a custom install and chose not to install it)

I don't own a mini, so I can't tell for sure, but Apple's tech spec page for the mini doesn't mention that it comes with Photobooth. Photobooth is bundled with Macs that have a built-in iSight camera, and that's the only way to get it.

If you're a senior member, then you should know that there's a rule about bumping threads: Don't do it if they're more than 6 months old.

Oh yeh my bad, I automatically thought Intel Mac: iSight: Photobooth

Yeh, the Mini's wouldn't have it since they don't have a built in iSight
