recently i transfered a couple (~50) videos from my HP desktop computer to my powerbook because i rarely use my HP anymore anyways, so the thing is on my mac they wont play! i get a white screen when i try to play them and an error saying a "codec" is missing or something, and i click the ok button and it takes me here >>> http://www.apple.com/quicktime/resou...omponents.html

but which one do i need to download?? do i have to pay for it? these files play perfectly fine on my HP with windows xp.....

the files im trying to play are in .avi format, is there a program i can use to change them? would that even work?

thanks any help is appreciated as always

Most likely all you need is (the free version of) divx, from divx.com. Next most likely is you also need the xvid and ac3 delegate components from www.insaneness.com

Other options are so remote that I won't bother mentioning them until you try the above and still have problems.

VLC is at www.videolan.org/vlc

Also try MPlayer OS X. That can play nearly any file under the sun, even Windows Media files up to version 8. For WMV9, try Flip4Mac (not free) or Windows Media Player for Mac (it's a POS though).

If you need to find out what type of movie you have, try getting Hexedit. If you open files with this, you can often get very useful info from the start of the file as to the type of movie it is.
