So, there was cruzerlock but it only works on pc's, and I carry some stuff that if I lost my thumbdrive I wouldn't want people to be able to access if they found it, so can you guys recommend a good program to do this on a flash drive or external hard drive?

Just create an encrypted disk image in Disk Utility, put it on the thumb drive, and put stuff in there. Without your password, nobody can get in there.

Are you using the device on Windows and Mac OS X? If so look for software on both platforms that supports the same encryption method (such as Blowfish). Crypt works acceptably on the mac, and there is an app called Animablis(?) on the PC .... which I've never used. Some versions of the Zip archiver support passwords (but not on mac AFAIK?).

The encrypted disk image is the best way to go if you only use macs. Otherwise there are USB disks with finger-print readers. It depends how serious you are.
