You'll probably tell me there's something built into the system to do this, but my forum searches found nothing, so here goes:

Way back in Sys 9 there were simple FREEWARES to show me hexadecimal and keystrokes for special characters (Tab, Return, etc), but I don't know how to obtain that for OS X.

Something that also offered the HTML equivalents would be very sweet, too.

The character palette (in most program's Edit menu) can show you that, but I believe what you are looking for is UnicodeChecker:
