*sigh*

Allow me to make this thread at least *slightly* useful:

Dear VideoLAN users,

The VideoLAN team is happy to announce the first beta version of VLC 0.8.4
(Note: 0.8.3 was skipped because it's technical improvements were too little)

Highlights from improvements include:
* Mac OS X interface:
- new dialogs (wizard, extended controls, bookmarks)
- drag and drop in playlist
and tons of bugfixes.

Hooray! Here's hoping it crashes less for me.

Cool, it seems like it doesn't change my sound output to 8bit anymore everytime I open up a movie.

I like VLC. I've been using it since it began being able to play DivX files on the Mac. Seems to me that MPlayer has leapt ahead of it though for the time being. The progress being made on VLC almost came to a stop for six months after a rapid development before.

VLC is good and I hope it catches up to MPlayer but for now MPlayer is the faster, better and more reliable player out there. Still it is good to see there is still life in the VLC development.

cheers

I ditched mplayer when I changed my setup and started using the TV to watch movies. VideoLAN allows me to select the output monitor, mplayer can't ...
Plus, it just feels more Mac-esque.

Kudos to the VideoLAN team for the update.

I'm going to disagree on the Macesque part. At least the latest realease for MPlayer (that is found on the official MPlayer homepage ( www.mplayerhq.hu ) is very Macesque. I think they are both very good, interface-wise right now although the preferences of VLC are less Mac-like than MPlayer's as it is.

The rest I agree with, VLC has way more features for display support and such.
