I cannot get stuffit expander 10 (just the free expander) to work on any new mac. Even the tech at the Applestore couldnt' get it to work on any mac with 10.4.2 It just launches and crashes. Allum of course provides no solution.

Shortly after release of StuffIt 10 a problem was discovered that affects some users. When the version checking code in the StuffIt applications polls the network interfaces on the Mac to see if any are active, it checks for an IPv4 or an IPv6 address. If IPv6 returns <null> because it is disabled, or for some reason never got an address, this version checking process crashes. This is problem occurs in all StuffIt 10 apps that use version checking when there is no IPv6 address.

The StuffIt applications that do version checking on launch are:

StuffIt Expander
DropStuff
StuffIt Deluxe application
StuffIt Express PE

The following work-around resolves the issue:

1 - Go to System Preferences->Network
2 - For each active interface, go to the "TCP/IP" page
3 - Click the "Configure IPv6..." button and set it to "Automatically"
4 - Click "OK"
5 - Click the "Apply Now" button

You should see an IPv6 address right above the "Configure IPv6..." button
6 - Save the preferences
7 - Try launching your StuffIt 10 apps again

Most OS X installations that we've encountered have both IPv4 and IPv6 addresses. If you must have IPv6 disabled, this workaround will allow you to launch the StuffIt applications listed above successfully and then disable the version checking in each. After doing that, you can then disable IPv6 again and use these StuffIt application without any problems.

Oh that's f*ing retarded. how about fixing the F***ing problem instead of forcing me to enable ipv6. as a sysadmin i don't need to show 500 A#)(%*#)(%*#)( users how to enable ipv six to download files of the internet. I just wish people would stop using .sit, .sitx which are completely irrelevant at this time... get with .zip.

I don't know if this is BECAUSE of Stuffit Deluxe 10.0 install or what, but I had a .sit file that was created in Stuffit 9 and encrypted with a password, when I tried to unstuff it with Deluxe 10, I got an error, upon further investigation it was a file corruption error. When I went to go back to 9, I got the same error. I have been working with Allume to solve the problem but they have no workaround and have literally said the entire contents of the file is lost

This is bad news. Even the backup is corrupted Luckily it wasn't mission critical work but it was every naughty photo of every ex-girlfriend that I have taken in compromising positions. All of my work....GONE!

Yeah well if you are completely serious an you have a genuine need for encryption you would be using AES-128bit DMG's or PGP disks.

What's the point in using an aging utility with proprietary simple password protection, when users can view the files in the archive?? You will likely be giving ppl the password in emails or posting them in forums for everyone to see anyways so what is the point of this exercise?

1. Zip for regular archiving and server compatibility. (Mac OS 9x stuffit can still decompress .Zip files btw)

2. AES-128bit DMG or PGP disks for genuine sensitive files

3. RAR for segmented files.

Where does a proprietary archiving format like Stuffit fit in?
