I love using iPhoto, but my problem is that it's the least reliable piece of software I've ever loved this much. I have 9000 5MP photos and iPhoto chokes on a regular basis. I get the beachball indefinatly and I'm forced to force-quit and reload. Also, printing takes 10 times as long and 10 times as much memory as it feels like it should.
I use Google Picassa 2 on my pc and the UI isn't as nice, but it never lets me down. It's super fast on even older machines.
What else is out there for the mac? What can I use to manage my photos that can handle thousands upon thousands of photos? Something with minor editing would be welcome as well.
Does everyone here just use iPhoto or what?

maybe an app called Shoebox could help you. It has recently been updated. You'll find it on www.macupdate.com - just do a search and it should pop up.

iView Media Pro is great if you want to organize your own system, sort, annotate, keyword, export customizable html galleries, etc. Great app if you like to be in control and take a hands-on approach. On the other hand, iPhoto requires much less of the user but gives you little choice in how your system is organized. People who are serious about archiving lots of images generally like iView a lot.

I'm a user of iView pro 2.6. I've been very happy with it but I won't be updating to 3.0 The upgrade cost $99 is too high for so little features added.
Instead I'm jumping ship and picking up Aperture, while more money, it does more and has the features I was hoping iview 3.0 was going to have.
Bottom line is to consider Aperture, if your looking for a digial workflow program, that does image management, or iView if you just need image management.

I have the same issues as the OP (but with a much smaller iPhoto library at 6000 photos). As one of the primary reasons for buying a Mac was iPhoto, I'd hate to throw it away (and at the same time am very disappointed in it's performance). iPhoto Buddy might be the way to go.

You may want to wait for the next version of iLife in January and see if that version of iPhoto is any better before spending more money for less product.

I am hoping that perhaps iLife '06 will use the CoreData features of Tiger to improve the robustness of the iPhoto library database.

Yeah, I think I'm going to wait till January. I'm frustrated though. I don't think I should have to pay for an upgrade just to get software that doesn't hang all the time. Still, the alteranitves seem... less than ideal. I wish Picassa had a mac version.

I need Aperture Express (like an Aperture Lite) - I outgrew iPhoto long ago, but I'm just not liking iView for some reason. While its definately faster than iPhoto, something about its interface just doesn't feel right. And it seems to have a problem resizing its thumbnail views when I adjust the thumbnail slider; some grow/shrink, but some do not. Not sure why. Plus, I'm looking to get in to shooting in RAW, especially since CF cards are so cheap lately. 24 pics from my Nikon D100 on a 256MB card wont do it for a RAW shooting session (though holds a very reasonable 75 top-qual JPGs). Time to pick up a 2GB card for less than the 256MB cost me originally.

I've just been playing around with iView, but think I'll stick with iPhoto too. iPhoto is free and although it's slower I find it's image editing controls better than iViews. Also, although I prefer iViews organisation, since it's easy to access in the finder, but the way it displays this in a window's explorer type way uses up quite a lot of screen space, or you shrink it down a bit but can't see the full names of the folder you have selected.
I'm gonna try iPhoto buddy too.

Umm, I hate to break it to you but iPhoto isn't free. Its part of iLife that people pay for. Its typically part of a new computer but again the cost is part of the purchase price.

I think because os the brand recognition of iPhoto, we may see aperture like features folded into that as opposed to trying to sell a lite version of aperture that will cannibalize ilife sales. What do I know however, Apple has had product overlap before, some of it worked some didn't.

Oh yeah, but it seems free because it came with the computer.

I tried Shoebox. It was AWFUL.
It took a week to get a response from the support group.
I had frequent error that caused the program to shut down.
There were a number of annoyances in the tagging interface.
It is much simplier to use Flickr or iPhoto.
Don't waste your time and money on this one.

Just curious ikema - exactly what is your problem with ShoeBox? Seems pretty personal since your only posts here on MacNN are to bash the program.
