So I noticed that the HD trailer for King Kong included an AAC-encoded 5.1 soundtrack. Anyone know of a way to pass this out the optical output on a G5, rather than resort to other hardware or mixing down to stereo? (the default, I assume)

Unless you can transcode it to DTS or Dolby, you're out of luck. I'm not even sure QT is capable of transcoding right now. So no, there's not, at least right now.

That's what I feared, but thanks anyway!

Yeah, I think you'd have to have multichannel hardware (like an M-Audio Revolution PCI card, or a pro USB or FW interface) to output multichannel straight from QuickTime.

Thanks - sadly, my speakers only have optical input and not the full 6-channel inputs

Check the M-Audio products anyway... who knows, maybe their drivers do allow AC-3 output from multichannel audio from Core Audio apps.

Thanks for the info. I just took a look at the Revolution 5.1 and 7.1 and both support pass through of Dolby Digital and DTS bitstreams through their digital output, and they can decode these to be played out through the multiple minijacks on the cards, but neither can encode back up

I guess I'll just have to be more discerning the next time when I buy either (a) a new computer or (b) a new set of speakers (or both!)
