This should be a simple question. I have a really old version of Photoshop (3.0) that meets my needs. But when I recently upgraded to OS X my old Photoshop had issues with OS X, so I purchased Photoshop Elements.

In old photoshop, I would frequently: (1) select a portion of an image with the marquee tool, (2) copy that portion (to the clipboard), (3) paste it back onto the image (it came in with a dotted line around it -- floating on top of the image), then (4) move the pasted portion around (either arrows or mouse) until I got it exactly where I wantee it, then (5) clicked somewhere else on the image to lock down the pasted portion -- now it was part of the image -- replacing what was under it.

In Photoshop Elements, when I try the same sequence and get to the paste step, the pasted portion comes in and immediately fuses with the underlying image. I can't move it around before comitting it to the image. How do I do this in Photoshop Elements?

It doesn't fuse with the image. It pastes in as a new layer. You can move the layer with the move tool. You can see the layers in the layers palette. Read the user manual or online help.

Holy flashback Batman! I hated the transition to layers back in the day. Now I can't see how we ever lived without them! Apparently some still do
