losing italics when opening Word doc in TextEdit

when i save a document in Word as either .doc or .rtf, then open it in TextEdit, it loses its italics. any thoughts on how i might avoid that? ive tried saving it in AppleWorks as a .cwk too - thats even worse - loses all its formatting
..?
