1. Throw the Norton Utilities in the trash. Seriously.
2. Search. The forums, the internet, whatever. Either way, you'll find that with Mac OS X, you really don't need to defrag as a normal user. It automatically does most of the maintenance you need.

As tooki alluded to, OSX automatically defrags files under 20MB.
In place of defraging, you can repair permissions as regular maintenance.

Here's Apple's Take on this. Basically its not needed and can be counter-productive.

Seconded.
The only problems I have ever had with a Mac have been caused by Norton. It isn't worth free.

but...osx automatically defrags itself?! i just installed and patched x-plane 8.20, about 8 gig total! you all are saying that this is not a big deal then? i am so used to win2k (and previous windows platforms) that i have a hard time with the concept. i would appreciate any furthur input you can pass along.

OSX automatically defragments files under 20MB, and it looks like Windows XP does some automatic defragmenting too.
