Does anyone know of a Jabber client for the Mac that supports the MUC protocol (Multi user chat). Basically, there is two chat implementations in Jabber, one old one that just allows group chats, and the newer MUC chat that supports password protected rooms, operator status and so on. I have a need for the newer protocol at work now.

Psi does not support MUC.

Adium does, however, it is out of the picture as it does not support separate events for group chat and user instant messages. I can't stand hearing the incoming message sound I have set up every time someone in a group chat says something, but rely on those sounds for instant messages.

Proteus seems to lack group chat period, as does Fire.

I'd prefer to be using a native OS X client and not one that works through X11, but if I must go that route, I will.

(looks like the other thread is broken. the title is there, but no message)

Hmm, guess I'm stuck using a Windows or Linux client on another machine for this until either Psi .11 or Adium 1.5 come out.

I suppose you've tried with iChat too?

iChat is a Jabber client. I never used Jabber, but since iChat can have multi person chat for AIM and Bonjour, I would assume it would support it for Jabber as well, too, also, in addition.

iChat will do the trick. Go to lounge@rooms.jabber.org.au for instance.

iChat is also not a MUC compatible client. If I try to join a password protected room, it simply tells me it cannot join because it is a password protected room. It never asks for a password, a sure sign that the Jabber support is only the older chat room protocol.
