I am a film major, with a new 12-inch G4 PB. I'm looking into best budget software options. Unfortuantely, I have only used the professional level versions of Premiere and Final Cut, not the consumer level versions.

So my question is, of those that have used Premiere Elements or Final Cut Express, which did you prefer, and why? Or do you have another option you'd like to suggest? My budget is in the $200 range.

FCE. No doubt.
Does about 85% of what FCP 5 does for way less $$$.

agreed, fcp.
becoming the standard, and you know the pro version...
and you'd be compatible with pro, and able to move up to it if u wanted...

It is really worth doing everything you can to push for the full version of FCP - unless you will only be doing simple cutting on the laptop, before moving projects over to a desktop with FCP on.

FCE is fantastic, but lacks critical features, frame accurate inserts, keyframing of effects, ganged playback etc...

Bear in mind that you can get an Apple educational discount, especially if your school bookstore lets students order with the "institutional pricing", which puts FCE at $99 and FCP at $299. Then you probably could even afford to go for Pro.
