Are Apple getting a kickback from Google?

Actually, I think they do. I vaguely recall reading something about it not too long ago, but I can't remember where.

EDIT: oops, after some research I realize I was thinking of something I read about Opera/Firefox.

I don't know about removing it but Safari Enhancer can change it to some other search engine.

It is in my Tiger . Safari 2.0.2 has the google bar joined to the address bar. I also tried to command drag it out and it crashed Safari. I don't use the google bar either.

I have a stupid habit though. Instead of type my query into the bar in front of me, I actually set my home page to google and click home, then type in my query. It is slower and I should really change my habits.

TETENAL meant that, before Tiger, it was possible to hide the Google field without hiding the address bar.

You can use Interface Builder (installed with the Developer tools) to open
/Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/ToolbarItems.nib
and just delete the search field from the toolbar.
Each new Safari update will require that you perform the modification again, but it only takes a moment.
