Since upgrading to Flash 8, I've noticed a few odd things happening. The main thing is that my cursor now disappears at some of those ads. I wouldn't mind but in Safari, my cursor is disappearing when my mouse is hovering over the tabs when the ads are directly under them. So I have to scroll the page and then select the tabs.

I also notice flash ads not sticking to the page when scrolling. They seem to jitter while scrolling. Not the ones on this site but it must be a certain kind of ad.

On a possibly unrelated note, I've noticed that happening with Quicktime previews when scrolling left to right. They also jitter in the same way. Is this one of the wonderful 10.4.3 'improvements'?

I think I'll go back to Flash 7 for the time being where my cursor was actually working right. I don't know why people break stuff when they try to improve it. Do people forget to test stuff these days before releasing it or what (nano screens, 10.4.3 nvidia drivers...)?

This (and another issue) is a downside of Macromedia now using OpenGL contexts for rendering Flash.

It's not that they forgot to test it. It's an engineering tradeoff.

I thought that might be why it is. I'm surprised flash ads still use my cpu so much.

I also tried a flash game just now and it crashed my browser.

I discovered that flash 8 fixes a security flaw so maybe I won't downgrade but I think I'll use a custom css file to hide them.
