Is this hype or is it something that will really be a benefit to most/many of us?
I have a Comcast link that maxes out at ~ 4.5 Mbps (download), so I am unsure if (any) benefit is to be had. Waddya think?

Is this maybe preemptory to a video download service?
Our Roadrunner connection is pretty much in the range of this app. Anyone with an idea of how to test if this thing makes a difference? Download something before and then after?

Interesting. I posted a thread on tethering to an EDGE modem some months ago, and one of the things I noted was that adjusting the sendspace and recvspace buffers made a significant difference in high-latency EDGE modem throughput.
Maybe this Tuner is being put out in anticipation of Mactel PowerBooks with built-in UMTS and/or HSPDA. HSPDA is supposed to have theoretical speeds of up to 14.4 Mbps. Cingular, coincidentally, is activating UMTS in over a dozen cities this month.
UMTS/HSPDA would make cellular teleconferencing using the built-in iSight possible. It'd also open up a new way to download iTunes media...maybe even provide a streaming alternative to satellite radio.

I just did a test at dslreports.com/stest and I get no difference from a before and after comparison.

Well, it's supposed to improve throughput for high-latency connections. I don't think Apple considers cable/DSL/Airport to be high-latency.
Traditional POTS modems have high latency, but they're not broadband. 3G cellular and satellite links are high-latency and broadband, however, which is why I'm intrigued at the possibility of built-in HSPDA in new Mactel PowerBooks.
EDIT: Apple already has a relationship with Cingular via the Motorola ROKR. Apple's also been keeping satellite radio out of its iPods. Maybe Apple's placing its bets on 3G?

On my cable connection, I can download at 800 K/sec and upload at 125 K/sec. Is this Broadband Tuner meant for my kind of internet connection?

Nothing is installed. All it does is change some settings. To restore them you just run the installer again.

i installed it on my panther (read on for how) and it pretty much doubled my speed using a speed tester from a server that was across the US from me.
To Panther users wanting to install
Right click on BroadbandTuner.mpkg and Go to Contents -> Packages.
Drag those to your desktop and let them copy.
Now just run the installer to install and Uninstaller to remove.
Apple didnt seem to have those installers check your Version

well, it made me feel better with myself knowing that I have installed a broadband optimizer and it was from Apple. I imagine that things load faster whilst maybe they don't.

I have a RevA PowerMac G5 2GHz that has always had a weird network delay on boot. Before I "installed" the bbtuner, I'd have to wait about two minutes for my networking services to come up after logging in.... now, after "install" (feels weird calling it that), this issue seems to be resolved. Kick ass!
Maybe it's me, but dashboard widgets that depend on an internet connection and general web browsing really feels snappier™.
