Are there any programs that MUST be on the same partition as the OS for it to run?
I believe GarageBand is designed this way?
I'm wondering because I just installed a fresh OS on a raptor [which is limited in space] and I have a 500gb HD drive to accompany it. Ideally, all the applications would reside on the 500gb, leaving the raptor primarily for OS operations.
Do you know of any applications that can't be run unless it's on the primary partition?
any help would be great

I've been able to run Microsoft Word and AppleWorks off of a USB flash drive of all places.

Mac applications are designed to run from anywhere, but:
a) They might need, look for, leave stuff in /Library/Application Support/ (of the boot volume)
b) Apple's system updates are dumb. If you move one of Apple's applications and run the updater it will just dump the updated files in the usual location (creating nonfunctional partial applications)

they work for the libraries associated w/the apps, but should the apps themselves still be installed on the main OS drive?

You can use symlinks to move the entire Applications folder, without the OS even realizing it. UNIX-style mount points can be used to achieve the same effect.

Why not partition the 500GB drive and install the OS and applications there?

Because he wants them on the Raptor, which is a faster hard drive than the 500GB hd.

wouldn't partitioning make the heads work harder to retrieve data?
