I am going out on a limb here, but is there a chance that Safari has an option to just "open" certain file types when downloaded instead of downloading them and then opening them?

Most files I would like to download, however, some files I just want to open without downloading.

I know this is possible in Internet Explorer, but I have never seen it in Safari.

I know already about the "Open safe Files" option, but that leaves a copy of the file on my desktop.

No, it doesn't.

You can't actually open a file off a web server -- the protocol doesn't support file operations. Browsers that "open" files on servers are simply downloading the file, saving it in a temporary folder, and then opening the temporary copy for viewing.

My point is that "open" from a server, while handy, is a misnomer since it's not what is actually happening. I agree with Apple not putting in a misleading function like this.

Note that Internet Explorer for Mac never had this function, either.

All this said, you might still be able to do what you want, at least with some file types: use the "More Internet" preferences pane (find it on macupdate or versiontracker) to set the handler for the file types you want.

tooki,

Thanks for your reply.

I knew about the temp folder, and not really opening it off the web server, but If I remember right, traditionally, the file is deleted out of the temp folder when you are done with it. Regardless, here is what I am looking to do:

I'd like to click on a file, i.e. a .torrent file, and instead of downloading to the desktop, it would download to some other location that I set, it would then open the file in the default application, then it would immediatly after opening trash the file.

Would this be possible with folder actions or automater? How do I tell safari to download some file types to one location while others to another one.

I tried out the pref pane that you linked to but I am a little bit confused as to what it does.

Thank you so much for your reply!
