I tried to transfer some MP3 from a thumbdrive to a friends iTunes library. I selected all the files on the thumbdrive (about 15) and drug them into the iTunes library. I then removed the thumbdrive. When we tried to play the songs they wouldn't play and there was an exclamation point next to the song title. Upon investigation we didn't have the box checked to copy the files to the iTunes music folder. If this is checked everything works fine. My question is does this cause two copies of the songs to be placed on the hard drive (and thus use up twice as much space)? Also, any explanation as to why the songs won't play if they aren't copied into the music folder? This friend is using iTunes on a Windows computer

This is very simple. If the songs are on the memory stick and the memory stick is disconnected from the computer, how would you expect to be able to play the songs? You can't. That's why the songs have to be copied to the computer.

Second, the music is only copied over one time.

I hope this helps,
Chris

I thought that might be the deal, but was unsure and wanted someone who knew for sure to let me know what was up. So yes, that helped. Thanks much.
