I installed Reader and I guess I missed something in the installation but now it acts as the plug-in for Safari. I much prefer the built-in Safari PDF viewer. Is there a way to use the built-in viewer once Reader is installed?

thanks,
kman

Go to /Library/Internet Plug-ins. The Adobe plug-in lives in there, and you can just transfer it to the circular file. After doing so, you'll have to quit and relaunch Safari for the change to take effect. And of course, the next time you launch Reader, it will notice that the plug-in is "missing" and launch its "self-heal" feature in order to "repair" this "problem". Fortunately, there's a "Don't ask again" button to make it shut up.

Too bad the Adobe Reader installer can't ask first before dumping this garbage all over your system.

Actually Acrobat 7 doesn't ask for your password and installs the plug-in. It's done it several times to me. Flash plug-in also installs in /Library/Internet plug-ins without asking your password. Could this be exploited?

Acrobat does install crap EVERYWHERE and insists on doing so.

I have the professional version and everytime I launch the darn thing it asks if I want to install "help files" in Office to make PDFs. It doesn't matter what I say, it installs them anyway and when I open any Office app. there is this stupid little menu bar for Acrobat taking up a whole menu bar space below the main menu bar. Every time, I have to remove the stupid files.

Really ticks me off, especially since all you have to do is print a freaking file to save it as a PDF...without the help of Acrobat thank you very much.

Acrobat does the same thing in Safari, but I actually find the Acrobat plug-in to be quite useful, even though my first reaction was to curse Acrobat because of its intolerable behavior with Office...

I've always hated Acrobat for those kinds of stunts. I don't let it touch my Mac; Preview and PDFpen do everything I need.

I was having the same problem, got rid of the plugin like CharlesS said, and things are back to normal.

I recall Acrobat Pro asking me if I wanted to use it's PDF plugin. I always say no. There's an option to turn it off somewhere in the preferences I believe. I've seen Acrobat do that crap with Office on Windows, but not on MacOS... I don't have Office installed, though.

Every time I've installed Reader, I've always had to remove the plug-in manually, because it installed it there as part of the standard install.

FYI, the permanent fix to keep Acrobat from installing plugins (for browsers or Office) is to find the installed plugin and put a folder of the same name in its place and lock it.
