I understand new consumer Macs include AppleWorks, found in applications folder. PowerMacs do not include AppleWorks unless it was negotiated as part of the package. Anyone care to correct me?

I'm 99% sure that appleworks does not come with pro macs. Consumer macs (mac mini, ibooks, imacs) come with appleworks, games etc, whereas pro macs (powerbooks, powermacs) do not come with these, but instead come with omnigraffel and some other stuff, so no, your PB would not have come with appleworks

AppleWorks was fine a few years ago, and my wife still uses it for most of her needs, but since you don't have it, try NeoOffice/J instead; it's free, it's probably a better application in most ways, and certainly it's more recently updated!
