I have a Mac mini with a Superdive and Toast 7.
I am trying to rip a DVD using Mac The Ripper, but everytime I choose the TV_VEDIO file, Toast says that the file is encrypted. What should I do?

MacTheRipper (MTR) will decrypt the DVD as it rips.
We need more information. What version of MTR? What DVD are you trying to rip? Is the region of the DVD different from the one the drive is set to?
For example, the new laptop DVD-R drives made by Matsushita (which are used in the mini) force reading of the region code from a DVD all the time, so that you can't use MacTheRipper or VLC to bypass region restrictions, without using a region code switch on the drive.

Really? That's evil! Which Apple laptops are those drives used in?

That's not how DVD region coding works.
The drive can't stop a program from reading the encrypted data. VLC et al don't need the decryption key off the disc (that's the only part the drive has control over), they have the keys already.

What can I do? Would a different version of MTR work? I have a MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-845 drive.

Nope. The newer Matsushita drives really do force a reading of the region code all the time.

Are you trying to rip a DVD from a different region from what the drive is set to? If you are, then a different version of MTR won't help.

But to do that, they have to read the DVD as a data disc. Some DVD players refuse to supply raw data from a disc unless the region code matches, and VLC will fail if that happens:

My iMac G5 is like that, and I haven't got around to flashing the thing yet (I have a region-free settop player) so VLC will refuse to play Region 1 discs since it's set to Region 2.

It sounds like I would need to get an external drive. Would an external drive solve the problem?

Most current SONY DVDs (such as Hitch and Stealth) ain't MTR 2.6.6 friendly due to the ARccOS protection. However, I found the DVD Decrypter on my dad's PC can handle them.

I don't think it's the content providers. It's Matsushita. Most of the other drive makers aren't forcing a read of the region code before allowing a disk to be accessed as data.
If it were the content providers, all newer drives would be doing it, I would think.
At least the newer formats won't have region restrictions, if the rumors are to be believed.
