Now that I'm using Aperture and the need to for a better backup solution has arisen.
Aperture as many of you know uses an proprietary database. Basically a container object.

Anyways one of my libraries has grown to beyond 8 gig. I tried creating aperture libraries by year but m y 2005 library is to large to fit on a singe dvd-r. So I'm wondering if apple's backup or retrospect's can span DVD-Rs.

As an alternative I was thinking of looking for some sort of device, tape, zip (something like that) which has plenty of storage capacity but also can be taken off site. I already have an exertnal hard drive I want something to take off site just incase.

Edit: I totally missed that you already have an external hard drive. Here's what I wrote anyway:

Backing up to optical media is just too much of a pain in my opinion. Get yourself an external hard drive and you won't have to worry about large files spanning multiple media. Besides the hassle factor, I think it's also safer because you only have one point of failure (if just one of the multiple DVDs your Aperture library is on fails, you lose the whole thing).

You can get FireWire + USB2 cases for around $30, and several-hundred GB hard drives for less than $100 (usually after rebates).

That's ok.

I think its important to have both. I'm probably going to pick up an additional external drive. I think it's important to create an offline set of backups.

Yeah, that's probably a good idea. And an additional drive wouldn't seem to be any worse a solution than anything else.

Another option would be to set up a box somewhere that you can sync with over the internet. Preferably both machines would have fast connections
