for the past couple of months or so [not sure if it happened directly after a system update or not] mail.app seems to be taking an age to download my daily spam-fest in the mornings. the connecting to the server and downloading the messages themselves seems to proceed at much the same rate as usual, but when the activity window progress bar gets to the "evaluating message..." stage things practically grind to a halt.
it's painful to watch; the progress bar will begin at "evaluating message 1 of 256" [mail seems to download messages in 'chunks' of 256 at a time] and slowly increments by about 1 a second [or longer!] so that the whole "evaluation" process can take 3 or 4 minutes. i wouldnae mind so much, if it were not for the fact that half the time - in spite of taking an ice age to evaluate the messages - mail.app still misses half the spam anyway!
anyone else suffering these symptoms? i've got about 10 - 15 rules [against which the "evaluation" is presumably taking place] - mostly really straightforward ones, just moving mail into different folders, depending on who it's from. surely these cannae be taxing mail.app that much?!
cue the annoyed bloke...
