My Mom somehow managed to trash her entire iPhoto data directory and doesn't have a current backup (pls don't ask how). Does anybody know a good good free/cheap utility that can recover trashed files (assuming they haven't been overwritten yet)? She's running Tiger ...

I found something from SubRosa, but it's $50 just to recover media files which seems kind of bush league. I mean I cold deal with $50 to recover ALL file types but just jpg, tiff, avi, etc.?

If you know of something... Thanks!

The best one around is DataRescue, from ProSoft Engineering (www.prosoft.com). However, you need to make sure you don't do anything with that computer until you have recovered the files - every move you make increases the likelihood that something will get overwritten.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

Another vote for Data Rescue II
I had a logic board death that killed my boot HD that had a couple of months worth of unbacked up data (DV footage, music, and several hundred photos). Instead of forking out huge dollars for data recovery I opted to buy Data Rescue II for $100 and it worked like a charm.
Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!
