iMovie HD isn't giving me back my disk space

I recently upgraded to iMovie HD, and ever since I've noticed something odd. When I empty the trash in an iMovie project, I don't actually get that disk space back.
For example, I just emptied 9.3 Gigs worth of trashed video clips, but my available space didn't budge. Now I'm down to just 3.99 Gb available.
What gives?

Have you actually went to the trash icon and emptied it? Or just from the lower right hand corner in iMovie? You may have to empty it from the trash icon before your available space reappears.

I'm not sure what you mean? The OSX trash? Or the iMovie trash icon? I've done both.

Yes, I meant the OSX trash being emptied rather than the iMovie trash. Sorry bout that. And if you've done both, then I don't know what else could be done.

iMovie HD is a non-destructive video application. In other words, you can't "trash" the originally imported material.
Previous to iMovie 4, you could dump the unwanted footage but you lost it for good. With imovie HD, the actual footage is still there-just held out of site in the trash. Unfortunately for those that do not want the feature of being able to restore the old clips, it will just sit there and take up room...
Do not run any other applications while using imovie if you are having a space problem.

I've reverted back to IM3 for that very reason.
I need my space.
