Hello, folks,
This may be equal parts hardware and software, so I will dupe this post in the Powerbook and Apps forums.
My 12 inch 1Ghz DVI's DVD-RW drive was repaired/replaced recently through Applecare because over the span of almost a year it fully failed to read, let alone burn, CDs and DVDs. When it was at least semi-functional, DVD movies from the hard drive and DVD movies from the optical drive itself would play, skip, ff/rewind, etc. smoothly even in full screen on my 20 inch external LCD monitor connected via DVI in closed-lid mode. Aside from occasional heavy background processes and/or hdd/optical drive windups, DVD Player would nary skip a beat.
Post repair, however, playing DVD movies either from optical disc or hard drive using the DVD Player app when hooked up to the external LCD in closed-lid mode now results in major sluggishness and skips to the point of being non-viewable. The problem worsens as the DVD Player window enlarges (all the way up to full screen mode) and triggering commands and menus. It is almost as if the DVD decoding is not being handled by the GPU but rather the CPU -- but another however: playing, skipping, forwarding, etc. the movies from either source on the PB's own screen is as smooth as ever. Adding yet another twist is the fact that VLC app seems to play from either source to either monitor (PB's own or the external LCD) with no problem, at least none of the problems exhibited by DVD Player.
Might anyone have an idea as to what is happening and any potential cure? When I received my PB from Applecare, I was prompted to select a region when I popped in the first DVD in order to test the repair, if this tidbit helps any.
Two good things did come out of this: the drive's reading and burning appear to have been fixed.
Than you for any help.
