Hi, I currently use MS publisher on my windows PC to design DVD covers and other stuff. I am currently in the process of ebaying my PC so that I can buy a new iMac. Is there anyway I can open my .pub files on the mac using some sort of app?

Cheers

I empathise. My wife has stuck by Publisher for her teaching work, even though we've always had Macs. I had to get Virtual PC to resolve it. SO, there is of course Virtual PC and the other emulators for Windows. Then I think the next best is save them as postscript .ps instead of .pub. Unfortunately there appear to be different understandings of what is meant by Postscipt in the world of computing. I believe that Preview is meant to open .ps files, and it's taken some publisher files that my wife developed, saved as .ps, and been able to convert them to .pdf files. Mac Scribus may be a possibility, although I can't get it to convert files. TeXShop looks promising, but it needs someone with better knowledge than I Have. One of my favourite programs, NeoOffice makes a brave but confused effort. Over to the experts!!

Nothing directly on the Mac. One suggested route is to open it with Pagemaker on the PC, then save in a format that InDesign on the Mac could read. That assumes a lot.

This is an example of problems with proprietary formats and transferring to another operating system or even program.

Publisher is really an abandoned product. I doubt any Mac users would have used it even if Microsoft had ported it.

Once you have a Mac, you might consider giving Pages (part of the iWork set) a try. It's pretty good for page layout. A sample of a sales flyer I made in Pages is shown below.

I do already have a mac, an iBook, but its just once I get the iMac i will be ALL mac, with no windows. I use pages on my iBook, its cool, but the only reason I wanted publisher is to open my .pub files. Nevermind

Could you elaborate on Pages and (iWork set). I have been a PC user and work at a state University where everything is Windows based and I have used Publisher quite extensively. We just got the iMac G5 at home and I don't mind trying out different desk top publisher software. I just got Adobe Creative Suite at work which has In Design but I havent played with that yet enough and I couldn't load it here at home anyway. Do you know of any demos for Pages? Would I have it and not know it? Where could I buy it?

Thanks

Yah unfortunately some people really have been wrapped into publisher. Our church for example constantly uses publisher for almost all of the bulletins and all manner of other things. It really sucks... I've tried to push them towards something else...

You could try

Papyrus, high end publishing and includes database $99. Cross platform (I just purchased this last week). Long history on Windows side.

RagTime Solo, free for personal use, ~$110 for educational/non-profit, also cross-platform.

PageStream, also cross-paltform, and long history on Windows/Amiga.
